The annual grape picking harvest is traditionally a busy time for local backpacker accommodation providers.
The Hunter Valley YHA in Nulkaba and Bottlebrush Backpackers in Cessnock were both at full capacity last Friday, as was the Wine Country Caravan Park at Nulkaba, with backpackers keen to make a bit of cash on their travels.
Most are European, with England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain among the nations represented.
A group arrived at Drayton’s Family Wines last week, having made their way down from the fruit picking season in Bundaberg.
Allen Arslanian, from the United States, said they have been warmly welcomed.
“The people have been so friendly, and everyone in the winery has been really good to us,” he said.
Part-owner and vineyard manager Greg Drayton has forged friendships with many backpackers who have worked at the vineyard over the years.
“It’s very interesting to talk to the backpackers and find out where they’ve been and where they’re going,” Mr. Drayton said.
