Adding a bit of colour to this year’s Cessnock Relay For Life is the Bellbird Park Butterflies.
With an age range of 27 to 84, the ladies will be decked out in wings and antennae as they walk laps of Baddeley Park on the weekend of March 20 and 21, all in the name of cancer research.
Formerly known as the Calvary MASH team, the group has undergone a name change this year, named for the club where they also hold their fundraisers.
“Mae said ‘you’re always flitting here, there and everywhere – how about we call ourselves the Butterflies’,” team captain Norma Robins said.
Norma has been involved with the Cessnock relay from its inception in 2008, drawn to the cause after two of her granddaughters suffered cervical cancer.
The following year she rounded up her bowling club-mates, family and friends, including two cancer survivors, and they entered the relay as one of Calvary Retirement Community’s 10 teams.
They raised about $4000 for the 2009 Relay through raffles, trivia nights and bowls days, and are well on track to another impressive total, with more than $1000 already in the kitty.
After a great experience at last year’s event, the ladies encourage local people to get their teams together and take part in the 2010 Relay.
“It’s nice to help other people, it’s such a well-organised event, and the candlelight walk is just magic,” said team member Mae Miles.
