Cessnock City Council rangers receive national award

18 Nov, 2009 09:28 AM
Cessnock City Council's rangers have received a national award for their Animal Management Plan.

The Australian Institute of Animal Management Inc is a national body which presents two awards (Animal Management Plan and Animal Management Officer) each year in recognition of those who contribute creatively and enthusiastically to the improvement of animal management service delivery.

"It is gratifying that the outstanding work of our entire ranger team has been formally recognised," said council's general manager, Bernie Mortomore.

"The Plan they developed is comprehensive, responsive to the community's needs and responsible according to the legislation we must enforce."

"As the Institute says, urban animal management is a service which affects our community, our economy, our environment and our governance and it is testament to the conviction of our rangers that they have been distinguished nationally for their management plan."

Since introducing the Animal Management Plan, Cessnock City Council has seen an increase in the number of dog registrations, an increase in the number of animals successfully re-homed and - most satisfying – a decrease in the number of animals which need to be euthanased.
