Cessnock Council not interested in amalgamation

10 Mar, 2010 09:19 AM
Cessnock City Council wants no part of any proposed council that would amalgamate it with Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens.

In a mayoral minute endorsed unanimously at last Wednesday night’s meeting, council will tell Newcastle Council of its opposition to the suggestion about forming a Hunter Coast Council.

Mayor of Cessnock, Cr. Alison Davey said council recently received correspondence from General Manager Newcastle City Council, Ms Lindy Hyam following Newcastle City Council’s resolution from their meeting on December 15 to investigate the amalgamation.

“I recommend to council opposition to the amalgamation of a Hunter Coast Council and the inclusion of Cessnock City Council in this amalgamation.

“I further recommend that council forward a response to the General Manager Newcastle City Council, Ms Lindy Hyam for distribution to the Minister of Local Government the Hon. Barbara Perry MP on behalf of Cessnock City Council with Cessnock’s opposition to the amalgamation and creation of a Hunter Coast Council,” said Cr. Davey.
