Cessnock Performing Arts Centre celebrates first birthday

11 Nov, 2009 08:23 AM
Cessnock Community Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) will celebrate its first birthday today with a special evening of entertainment.

The birthday celebrations will start at 7pm and will include a performance by talented local group, Short Back and Sides.

Council’s Community and Cultural Programs Manager, Simon Eade, said: “We would also like to thank the many people who have supported the centre during our first year, look back on the year's achievements and provide some teasers about the exciting program that is shaping up for 2010."

The first year of operations at the Performing Arts Centre theatre has seen 14 productions with more than 5500 people enjoying the shows and including one night when every seat in the theatre was booked. The shows have ranged from pure rock to classical music, opera to a capella and comedy and theatrical pieces for young and old.

Drama classes have grown from the first class being held with just 11 young people to four classes with a combined enrolment of 42 students.

As well, the community meeting rooms and other non theatre spaces have become popular with regular bookings being made and a diversity of functions including auctions being held in the foyer. “The growing community support for the venue and, importantly, the acceptance and welcoming of all facets of the facility as being a part of our social and cultural life in the Cessnock LGA has been outstanding and has given CPAC staff and council great encouragement to build on the opening year's successes,” Mr. Eade said.

To join in the first birthday celebrations contact the Performing Arts Centre on 4990 7134. Tickets are $25 each and as there are a limited number of seats, bookings are essential.
