Cessnock ready for the relay

26 Mar, 2008 08:33 AM
If one young team is anything to go by, then Baddeley Park will be a sea of colour when it hosts Cessnock’s first Relay For Life fundraiser this weekend.

The Rainbow Lollypops, consisting of Mount View High students Emma Baillie, Ethan Baillie, Kaylah Madden, Jordan McKendry, Renay Dunshea, Brittany Peacock, Rachelle Piper, Samantha Stephenson, Sarah Horne and Brittany Hall, and “supermums” Gina Baillie and Gayle Madden, will don their brightest tops, tights and accessories, all in the name of fun with friends, and raising a few dollars along the way.

‘We’re going to be the coolest team there,” joked Emma, who came up with the idea to enter a team in the Cessnock relay after dancing at the Maitland event.

Renay said the team was inspired to enter the relay, knowing that they are helping raise money for cancer, all while being together and having fun.

“And staying up all night eating lollies,” Brittany Peacock added.

The mums on the team agreed that Relay For Life is a good concept.

“Everyone we talk to, someone has been touched by cancer,” Gayle said.

The team has gathered donations from their family, friends and the community, and will be selling lollypops on the day to add to their total.

More than 570 people in 48 teams will take part in Cessnock’s first ever Relay For Life at Baddeley Park this weekend.

This has exceeded the target of 40 teams, and they will take part in the overnight relay that starts on Saturday at 2pm.

It’s not too late to register a team in the Cessnock Relay For Life, so visit www.relayforlife.com.au/nsw or phone Lisa at the Cancer Council on 4961 0988, or organisers Ian and Sue Howson on 4990 7379 or 0438 507 379.
