Combined Cessnock Council staff Christmas party move fails to gain support

08 Feb, 2012 09:11 AM
Indications are that for the time being Cessnock City Council indoor and outdoor staff will not be getting together for Christmas celebrations.

This follows council rejecting a notice of motion by Cr. Ian Olsen last meeting that General Manager, Lea Rosser bring back a report that tells council about the outcomes of consultation with staff about Christmas celebrations with the aim of achieving a whole of council staff end of year Christmas celebration.

“If council can organise one function for all it will eliminate the belief that some get more or better than others. It will also break down barriers between indoor and outdoor staff and allow all parties to get to know each other better,” he said.

He said it was best for the general manager to sort it (Christmas parties) out for the best outcome. “Let’s break down the barriers and treat everyone equal.”

Cr. Olsen received little support with most councillors believing staff did not want change. Cr. Jeff Maybury said the outdoor staff party at Weston Workers Club went off well, and he believed the cultures would not coincide with both groups coming together.

Cr. Neil Gorman said he viewed the motion as assuming the staff wants to mix. He said the general manager should ask the staff want they want to do.
