A six votes to five majority was enough to get through Cr. Chris Parker’s motion that council use only free range eggs.
His notice of motion to the last council meeting in part called for all future catering arrangements only be made only with those who can guarantee they use free range eggs. It also included that the use of free range eggs be stipulated in any future tenders or contracts about the supply of food council is involved with.
Cr. Parker said there has been a movement worldwide to abolish egg production through caged hens and that many councils are adopting a similar policy to what he suggests.
He said by adopting his motion council would be shown as being humane to animals and would be sending the proper message to residents.
Cr. Dale Troy supported the motion saying the policy would be simple to introduce and that using free range eggs would not cost council much extra for its catering.
The Advertiser contacted Café of Cooper who looks after council’s catering who said they have no problems meeting the new requirements.
