Cessnock City Council will be developing a program to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the discovery of the South Maitland Coalfields.
Cr. Graham Smith successfully moved that council get involved marking the anniversary and that the cultural planning and Development Committee oversee the developments.
He also suggested that community groups be invited to submit proposed events to include in the program.
The commemoration will take place next year. Cr. Smith told council that the discovery of the South Maitland Coalfields by Professor Edgeworth David in August 1886 has been the cornerstone of the city’s economic development.
“Many of the city’s institutions owe their existence to the influence of the coal industry, as do many of the significant landmarks.
“We should also acknowledge Professor David’s harmonious relationships with the early winemakers throughout his work in the Mount View and Pokolbin Districts.”
He said that while coal mining is no longer a major producer in the city’s boundaries, many people remaining employed in the industry.
Cr. Smith said plans should start in the near future with a view to a launch early in 2011 with a culmination in August that year. He also suggested that commercial sponsorships be sought to help conduct the commemoration.
