The Association of Decorative and Fine Arts (ADFAS) will present a lecture by Michael Scott-Mitchell on the design of theatre sets at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on Monday.
In this lecture, which starts at 7pm, Michael will be specifically telling the group about his award winning set designs for "Ying Tong, a Walk with the Goons", the Cauldron and Ceremonial Stage for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Adelaide’s Ring Cycle and the Opening Ceremony for the 2006 Asian Games. Michael’s current set design project is for the new musical “Doctor Zhivago” at the Lyric Theatre, Sydney.
Michael studied architecture at Sydney University before continuing his studies at NIDA. In recent years he has designed a number of major international events including the set design for Adelaide’s Der Ring Des Nibelungen (2004) for which he won the 2005 Helpmann award for Best Scenic Design. The production also won a Helpmann for Best Opera Production 2005 and nine other Helpmanns for direction and performance, garnering an unprecedented 11 awards.
Michael has designed in excess of 100 productions within Australia and internationally. Under the auspices of the Goethe Institut an exhibition of Michael’s Der Ring Des Nibelungen photographs was held at the Sydney Opera House in 2005. The collection of these images has now been acquired by the National Library of Australia
The lecture is free to members of ADFAS, and visitors are welcome at a fee of $25. The lecture will be followed by supper and the opportunity to meet the lecturer.
