First time exhibitor takes major prize at Weston Art Show

First time exhibitor Geoffrey Breen of Pokolbin took out the major prize at this year’s 46th annual Weston Art Show.

Mr. Breen won the Cessnock City Council $1000 acquisitive prize with his traditional work Paddocks-Buchanan NSW.

Carey Bay artist Bruce Naylor stamped his authority on the show winning the Hydro Aluminium sponsored Regional Art Prize, worth $1500 with his work Whitebait.

It as the second occasion Mr. Naylor has won the prize after success last year with his painting called Simpson. Prior to that he had won the major Cessnock Council acquisitive prize three times.

Mr. Naylor added to his major award winning the Contemporary section with Salt Flats.

Nelson Bay’s Gerhard Ullmann, fresh from picking up two major prizes at last year’s show won the Water Colour section with Midday Venice.

Margot Hain took out the pencil, pen or ink prize with a work called Stockton Bridge.

Still life: “Things I Like” by Rhonda Parcel

Flowers: “Poisonous Girls” by Deanne Newland

Miniature: “Paterson Valley” by Jane Hicks

Junior sections

Age 8 to 11 years “Gotham City at Night” by Jackson Matthews; Rising Talent Award “Dragons Past Time” by Jemma Gillard; 12 to 15 years, “Fountain of Serenity” by Sarah Kay-Herring

Rising Talent Award, “Paul Klee Scape” by Tarni Sneddon, “Dog in the Bush” by Rebecca Clark

Senior youth: Age 16 to 18 years, “Rosenbalt Boy” by Elizabeth McGrath

Senior youth encouragement award, “Boardwalk - Flynns Beach Port Macquarie” by Sureya Avard-Percival. Rising Talent Award, “Public vs Private” by Elizabeth Crichton.

A large crowd attended opening night last Wednesday when Cr. Allan McCudden performed the official opening. Cr. McCudden said that the show, now in its 46th year, is thought to be the longest running art show outside a capital city.

He, along with rector, the Rev. Wayne Sheean, thanked the sponsors and band of volunteers who make the show happen each year.

Kurri High School art teacher, John Adams was overall judge of the show.
