Coffs Harbour has its Big Banana, Nambour its Big Pineapple and Goulburn its Big Ram.
Soon Kurri will have something similar. Kurri Kurri Tidy Towns and Towns With Heart will be working together on an ambitious project in 2009 with the construction of a 4.5 metre kookaburra sculpture.
The sculpture is being sponsored entirely by Hydro Aluminium with a donation of $15,000 and will be unveiled as a gift to Kurri as part of their 40 year celebration in 2009.
The idea for the sculpture was put forward by Towns With Heart Deputy Chair, Ken Warren, and will be constructed by Pokolbin artist Chris Fussell.
Tidy Town representative Pam Way and Town Coordinator Wendy Franklin have been liaising with the artist and looking at a series of potential sites in the Kurri Kurri area for the sculpture.
Mrs. Way said that this was a great opportunity for two community groups to work together towards a common goal.
“This is a great initiative for Kurri Kurri and will be another feature for our visitors to enjoy. It is also an achievement for our respective community groups to work together on a project and accomplish something for our town- it’s a great feeling,” said Mrs. Way.
The sculpture will start in the New Year.
