Many years of planning culminated recently in the unveiling of a stone monument at Wollombi.
The monument features plaques that relate Wollombi’s Aboriginal history, the story of the early European settlers and the building of the Great North Road, and the history of the Wollombi Police District and the Wollombi Courthouse - now the Wollombi Endeavour Museum.
The monument project and the production of a booklet about Wollombi Cemetery were initiated by Wollombi Valley Chamber of Commerce and made possible by funding assistance from NSW Department of State and Regional Development, Cessnock City Council, Wollombi Valley Progress Association, and local contributors. The fine stonework of the monument is the work of local stonemason Albert Kraan of Wollombi Standstone.
The monument was unveiled by Member for Cessnock, Kerry Hickey. This was followed by the launch of the Wollombi Cemetery booklet by Mayor of Cessnock, Cr. Alison Davey at a function at the Wollombi Cultural Centre.
