A meeting to consider starting up a Men’s Shed in Kurri will be held on Monday, May 10.
The meeting will be held in Kurri Community Centre starting at 5.30pm with a sausage sizzle.
There is a significant movement Australia-wide to establish Men’s Sheds in the community and work has been going on behind the scenes to establish one in Kurri.
Pastor Mark Venz from the Seventh Day Adventist Church is coordinator of a cluster group working on the project.
People who would like more information can contact Pastor Venz on 0408 363 693 or the community centre on 4937 4555.
Commenting on the proposal, Hunter Region BEC Manager, Rod Doherty, said there is a possibility an area is available in Kurri Hospital grounds to establish one of the sheds.
Men’s sheds have been growing like a wild fire within the Hunter Region in the passed few years, an array of over 20 independently run groups that focus on men's issues and the comradely first fostered in the work place has come into its own, opening ways for social inclusion, warding off depression and other health issues, supporting mates as only mates can.
The proposed Kurri Men’s Shed is supported by the Hunter Valley Shed Cluster Group Inc.
Pastor Venz said Kurri Hospital has opened its doors to give this important health initiative a home and place to start from.
“What is needed now is input from the local community as to what they want the shed to be, to do and to have. A steering committee for the initial formation and direction will take on board all the public comments from the meeting and ensure the shed develops a local flavour,” he said.
