Six Cessnock councillors in the running for State preselection

15 Sep, 2010 10:26 AM
In what is developing into an absorbing contest for the Seat of Cessnock at next year’s State elections, up to six Cessnock City Councillors could be in the in the running.

One has already gained pre-selection, another is awaiting the outcome, two have indicated interest in seeking pre-selection as Labor’s candidate, another is keeping his options open while yet another has said he will be running, but on what platform is to be announced.

Labor’s Cr. James Hawkins said he has been asked to consider standing by two high ranking party members. He said he takes the approach as an honour and while he is enjoying his role as a councillor it would be an honour and privilege to serve at a higher level in the State Government.

Cr. Dale Troy who stood as a Liberal candidate at the September 2008 elections said he will be contesting the Cessnock seat, adding that where he positions himself is yet to be announced.

He said the electorate has significant issues with law and order and the condition of the roads. Believing that Labor will be defeated at the polls next March, he can not see a Labor member being taken notice off.

Another councillor, Neil Gorman from Kurri, has already gained endorsement and will be contesting the seat for the Nationals. He is a first term councillor, like Cr. Hawkins.

Another Labor Party member, Cr. Bob Pynsent said he is interested in standing for pre-selection citing his strong local knowledge and being well-known in the community as strong credentials. He also gained the highest number of primary votes in the mayoral election in September 2008.

Cessnock resident Clayton Barr, says he also intends to nominate for pre-selection for Labor. He expects there will be a handful of nominations that the party room will decide on the best candidate. Mr. Barr has stood for election on Cessnock City Council two years ago.

Independent councillor and deputy mayor, Cr. Ian Olsen, said a number of people have approached him about contesting the set and he is keeping his options open. He said he feels he has been around long enough now to have the experience to carry out the role of State Member.

Cr. Olsen contested the seat in 1999 when retiring member, Kerry Hickey was first elected.

Asked what his intentions are so far as contesting the March 2011 State elections, Greens councillor James Ryan said the Greens go through a pre-selection process which is happening now. He said he is part of the process and as such couldn’t comment further.

The race for the safe Labor seat intensified after sitting member, Kerry Hickey, announced he would be retiring from politics at the next election after 12 years in the job.
