Bellbird joined Wentworth at the top of the Cessnock District first grade cricket points table after a convincing first innings victory over Greta/Branxton at Miller Park on the weekend.
Resuming the second day’s play at 0-26 in pursuit of 173, the Tigers cruised to victory just before the tea break with six wickets in hand. Rob Clarke top scored with a crafty 62, Shannon Attewell supported well with 46 with Jason Orr (30 no) and Jason Lee (24 no) at the crease when the winning runs were hit.
Greta/Branxton’s under-strength bowling attack battled hard but numerous catches were grassed meaning that they were always going to struggle. Trevor Rees bowled outstandingly but was only rewarded with 2-51 off 13.
Kurri’s slow start to the season continued when they were upset by Supporters Club at Kurri’s Margaret Johns Park.
Needing 190 for first innings points, the Titans were all out for 141 with Justin Kavanagh leading the way with 37. Jake Gordon (34) and Cameron Peters (22) were the only other batsman in double figures, while for the Goannas Michael Ho (4-18 off 5.4), Matt McCarthy (3-50 off 20) and Nathan Stapleford (3-17 off 14) shared the wickets with some very economical bowling.
The match between Railway Hotel and Wentworth at East End was abandoned due to a damaged wicket and Mulbring had the bye.
