Cessnock District Cricket report

27 Jan, 2010 11:44 AM
Cessnock District Cricket started round 10 of competition in sweltering conditions on Saturday with four centuries and a hat-trick being added to the long list of individual milestones already achieved this season.

In first grade Supporters skipper Nathan Stapleford recorded his second career century against Greta/Branxton at Baddeley Park. After being dropped with the very first ball he faced, Stapleford made the Blues pay dearly as he smashed 14 boundaries and two sixes on his way to 118.

In a memorable day for skippers Railway Hotel captain Troy Culley (100) also notched a century against Mulbring at East End.

In second grade Greta/Branxton wicket-keeper Ben McLaren recorded his maiden century against Supporters Club at Miller Park. Coming in at number five McLaren hit 13 boundaries on his way to an unbeaten 102.

The innings of the round however came from Supporters Club third grade batsman Adam Davies who opened the batting and carried the bat with 152 against Greta/Branxton at Miller 2. He blasted the ball to all parts of the park, scoring 14 boundaries and clearing the rope on eight occasions.

In an otherwise fairly difficult day for bowling and fielding, Mulbring third grade seamer Darren Young picked up a hat-trick and finished with the excellent figures of seven for 22 off five overs against Supporters Gold at Baddeley 6.

On the back of Stapleford’s ton Supporters Club are well placed in their two day fixture against Greta/Branxton. The Goannas compiled a very healthy 298 from their 81 overs received. Stapleford was well supported by Nathan Kerr (43), Anthony Lindner (30 no) and Fleet Calder-Hoinville (25). Mark Bercini (2-40 off 12), Zach Thomas (2-31 off 12), Chris Lawrence (2-64 off 13) and Orey Dorn (2-34 off 12) in his maiden first grade game all picked up a brace of wickets each. The Blues have it all ahead of them when play resumes this Saturday and will have to bat extremely well to remain any chance of making this year’s semi finals.

Railway Hotel recovered from six for 93 to compile 234 against Mulbring at East End. Along with Culley’s century, Alan Heath (29), Oliver Levido (24), Mark Harrison (16) and Will Bischoff (15) all made contributions for the Eagles. Marlins skipper Nigel Callan was the best with the ball with 3-63, with Lewis brothers Josh (2-37) and

Chad (2-40) also bowling tidily. Mulbring are 0-4 in reply.

Kurri also made 234 in their encounter with competition front runners Bellbird at Kurri’s Margaret Johns Park. Skipper Tyler Power led by example with 76, with Simon Marshall (62) and Mick Gibson (37) offering much needed support. Once again Dave Gyler was the Tigers’ best with the ball, collecting 4-78, with Scott Miller (2-39) and Ben Bradley (2-31) continuing their recent good form.

Wentworth no doubt enjoyed the bye.
