Cessnock District Cricket report

03 Feb, 2010 09:29 AM
After extreme heat the week before, all Cessnock District Cricket matches were washed out last weekend except for the two games played at Miller Park.

At Miller One Greta/Branxton accounted for Supporters Club in second grade by 43 runs in the steamy conditions.

Batting first the Blues were bowled out in the 40th over after compiling a healthy 180, with club president Peter MacKenzie smashing an unorthodox 76. Scott Nugent was next best with an unbeaten 43, with Brent Dries (21) and stand in skipper Dean Bard (17) keeping the scoreboard attendant busy. Joel Edwards (3-47 off 10), Ricky Chambers (3-45 off 9.1) and Seth Knott (2-31 off 10) were the Goannas’ best with the swinging ball.

In reply the visitors were 9/137 at the completion of the run chase, with Edwards capping an excellent all-round game with 45. Tim Goldman (30) and skipper Troy McCord (23) also made starts for the Goannas. Bard (3-37 off 10) and Phil Aughey (3-34 off 10) were the home side’s best with the ball.

The only other association game at Miller Two was easily won by Supporters over Greta/Branxton in third grade by 53 runs.

Batting first the Goannas made 8/147 from their 40 overs, with Bruce Cowley notching an unbeaten 52. Jason Spruce continued his recent good form with 28, with Phil Peek also among the runs with 20. Adam Holmberg was Greta/Branxton’s best with the ball, collecting 3-24 off 10, with Brent Bailey also bowling a tidy line with 2- 18 off 6.

In pursuit of the modest target the home side were bundled out inside 22 overs for just 94, with Brett Brunner leading the way with 31. Bailey was next best with 27, while for Supporters Mark Williams (4-42 off 10), Phil Hicks (3-35 off 7) and Spruce (3-10 off 3.1) all kept the Blues batsman honest.
