Cessnock junior cricket sides turn in top performances

03 Feb, 2010 08:34 AM
Cessnock District Cricket Association's Under 14’s rep side continued on their winning way and remain equal leader of the Hunter Valley competition with one round remaining.

The Under 14’s batted first and made 94 with best performances by Daniel Bailey 21 and Jackson Redmond 18 not out. In reply Singleton was all out for 68. Cessnock’s two opening bowlers were sensational in two spells. Lachlan Edwards finished with four for 10 from 10 overs and Sam Apthorpe 2 for 10, also from 10. Jack Morris and Matt Soper-Lawler picked up one each.

Cessnock play equal leader Maitland at Baddeley Park on Sunday in a match which will see the winner progress to the final.

Cessnock Under 12’s also put up a remarkable performance to beat the previously undefeated Singleton.

The Under 12’s played under heavy skies, rain, patches of sun and lots of wind, making 4 for 98 off 25 overs to defeat Singleton 10 for 78 off 35 overs.

Cessnock had safe hands holding seven catches and batted, fielded and bowled well as a team with great results.

Brodie Jones finished with 4 for 11 off 8 overs, Jesse Stevens 2 for 6 off 2 overs. James Harmen, Luke Morris, Jacob Garrington and Shaun Douglas all took one wicket. Ballie Peel 39, Mitchell Thomson 19 and Brodie Jones completed a good double with 11 not out.

In the Under 16’s Singleton won the toss and batted first and was bowled out for 103 in the 48th over. Best bowlers were Seth Knott with 2 for 16 off 10, Mitchell Wyborn 2 for 19 off 10 and Dalton Peel with 2 for 14 off 7.3.

Cessnock produced some excellent fielding, running out three of the Singleton batsmen. Cessnock’s innings got off to a flying start with the loss off the first wicket at 39 in the ninth over and continued to five for 77 when rain stopped play for one hour.

When play resumed Cessnock needed just 27 runs but lost four more wickets before passing the Singleton total in the 34th over making nine for 106. Best with the bat for Cessnock were Michael Mascord with 25, Mitchell Wyborn 21 and Timothy Goldman 17.
