Cessnock Touch Football report

02 Dec, 2009 09:38 AM
In a game that lived up to all the Touch Footy competition pre-match hype, the Underdogs defeated arch rivals Drunken Bums 2-1.

This win should see them wrap up the coveted minor premiers position but more importantly give them a clear mental edge over their opponents. Although it would be hard to single out individual performances the efforts of Ryan Stainton and Liam Armstrong were sensational. Take nothing away from their rivals though and if the rest of the squad can match the efforts of Scott Redgrave and Carla Wile, they will go a long way towards defending their title.

The other C-grade game saw the Has Beens come up with a morale boosting 6-2 win over Hunter Valley Hire. Youngster Oliver Powell dominated all facets of the game but he was ably supported by Dave Kembrey and Glen Crossley. Even though they were defeated H.V.H. competed strongly until the final whistle with Brodey Saunders and Todd Patterson tireless in their efforts.

In A-grade results the Retreads bounced back after being defeated by the Chargers 4-1, to record a solid 4-1 win over giant killers Pedens. Youngsters Riley Thomas and Joe Woodbury led the way with their non stop efforts but the game was dominated by Jackson Roe. Looking much fitter than previous seasons, his pace and skill proved too much for his opponents to contain and if the rest of his team mates can lift to anywhere near his game they will challenge all their opponents.

The Chargers followed their 4-1 win over Retreads with a tough 4-2 win over the ever improving All Stars. Brent King and Eddie Henderson led the way for the Chargers.

This team’s consistency has been remarkable and they have the minor premiership all but wrapped up. The All Stars seem to be timing their run towards the finals though and this team has an uncanny knack of getting it right for the games that count and with new recruits Mitch Clarke and Michael Ingle slotting comfortably into team structures the All Stars will defend their title down to the wire.

B-grade results saw the Hawks come up with a much needed win. They defeated the improving KFC 4-3. The emotion shown by these boys after the game was moving and proved although they have struggled at different times during the year the pride in their performances was still evident.

Paul Yates and the amazing veteran Steve McNaughton were the best in a good team effort. Fatal Attraction and the Zombies continued their great rivalry and they ended up playing a three all draw. Jesse Sams and Mick Alexander were the pick of Fatal Attraction while Ben Pringle and Ben Moynehen were Zombies best on the night. Super Troopers have jumped over Zombies in the race for the top spot with an 8-3 win over KFC, their form has an ominous look about it and all B-grade opponents will need to be at their best if they hope to match them.
