Two years ago, at age 12, Jessica Kelly played a couple of games of golf with her dad and brother and decided she liked the game.
Today she is making the sport her own after becoming the youngest player ever to win The Vintage Golf Club Ladies Championships held last month.
Jessica’s father Michael Kelly says sport comes naturally to his daughter.
The 14-year-old from Cessnock has represented the Hunter at State level in soccer, cricket and golf. She also earned a junior black belt in Shim Jang Tae Kwon Do at the age of nine.
“Jessica is good at any sport involving a ball,” Mr. Kelly said.
Jessica says she has given up Soccer this year to focus on golf. She has joined the Jack Newton Golf Foundation and plays tournaments whenever she can.
Her best performance prior to the win at The Vintage was a second in the Cessnock Golf Club Championships in June.
She is currently playing off a handicap of nine, passing her dad’s and fast catching that of her brother Matthew. Matthew, 17, currently plays off four and was the winner of The Vintage Junior Championships.
Director of The Vintage Golf Club, Steve Wylie, said it was encouraging to see young people continuing to take up golf.
“Jessica’s win is a remarkable achievement considering her age and the fact that she has only been playing for two years,” Mr. Wylie said.
“She has a bright future in golf,” he added.
Jessica and Matthew are students at Mount View High School.
The Vintage Golf Club Ladies Championships has been running at the Greg Norman designed course at Rothbury for the past six years.
