The East Cessnock Comets took on the Bowls Australia Commonwealth Games men side in front of a crowd last Thursday at East Cessnock Bowling Club’s indoor green.
The Comets had a victory against Australia’s best in the triples, with Terry Ross, Jon Dimopoulos and Stephen Fairfull winning in a tie breaker against Brett Wilkie, Wayne Turley and Mark Casey.
Comet doubles, Marc Bender and Michael Cronin, had a phenomenal game against Mark Berghorfer and Aron Sherriff with Sherriff a standout performer.
“Aron showed why he plays for Australia,” Cronin said.
Comet, Nathan Allen, also played extremely well against Commonwealth squad member, Leif Selby in the singles.
The Commonwealth Games men and women’s squad have been using the greens of ECBC and Cessnock City for training.
The drier and harder conditions of the greens in Cessnock are similar to those in Delhi and have been useful in the squads’ preparations for the Commonwealth Games in October.
Last Thursday’s competition was invaluable training for the Commonwealth side.
High Performance Coach of the Commonwealth men’s side, Rex Johnston, said: “The Comets are capable of beating a lot of teams we will meet in Delhi”.
East Cessnock Comet, Marc Bender, said that he felt privileged to be playing against the Commonwealth side. “It is a bit of an experience”, he said.
Cronin, who often plays with the Commonwealth squad and almost made the team set for Delhi, said: “It was good to see the kind of level at the top that you’ve got to go for, and we (the Comets) are not far off it”.
