Weston Workers make a good start

Weston Workers Cricket Club Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri started their 2002/03 season with its first to fifth grade sides all playing Wests.

First grade won the toss and bowled first dismissing Wests for 195 in the 60th over after having Wests 9/163 in the 49th over.

Skipper Andrew Yeomans started the season well snaring 5/34 off 13.2 overs while off spinner Robbie Clarke bowled a god line taking 2/17.

Kirk Mullard 1/44, Aaron Wolinkski 1/16 and David Fairfull 1/15 also added good support to restrict the opposition.

Weston had to face 20 overs prior to stumps with openers Matthew Murnane 23 and Graham Snedden 21 solid in their opening stand before being dismissed. At 2/50 with Andrew Rees and Kirk Mullard at the crease, Weston will be looking for a safe start next Saturday with 80 overs to face.

Second grade batted first at Kurri Central and were dismissed for 103 with Jason Edmonds making 32, Rodney Murnane 13 and Cale McKenzie 12. In reply Wests were 5/127 at stumps with Kel Mather taking 2/24, Nathan Bootland 1/28 in his 2nd grade debut and Rodney Murnane 1/14.

In 3rd grade Wests scored 234 with David Burgess claiming 4/27, Brodie Roberts 2/32 and Ben Elder 2/19 the leading wicket takers. Weston have been dismissed already and are 0/1 in their second innings.

Fourth 4th grade batted first at Chinamans Hollow, Weston and scored 138 off 40 overs with veteran Robert Snedden 46 and Brad Bates 22 highest scorers.

In reply Wests scored 9/134 with Brad Bates capping a fine double 3/1 and Matt Johnston 2/24 best with the ball.

5th grade were at Blackhill Wicket with Wests scoring 7/187 with Peter Edwards 2/35, David Gordon 2/37 while Robert Lowbridge, Gary Schofield and Phillip Bennett took one wicket each. In reply Weston scored 5/193 with David Gordon 69 and Robert Lowbridge 50 capping good games while youngsters Jack Bennett made 14 and Jake Gordon was eight not out.

The juniors also started with the Under 15's up against Wests at Coronation with Wests scoring 152. Jay Hughes 2/33 was best with the ball. Weston scored 9/132 with Andrew Grant 43, David Farrell 24 and Gary Schofield 19 in a fighting effort to lose only narrowly.

The u/12's played Karuah at Karuah with Weston scoring 5/89 with Simon Marshall 25. Blake Saunders 12 and Mat Lindsay 8 both not out.

Karuah were all out for 96 with Simon Marshall 3/7, Zac Thomson 1 for 2 and David Mitchison 1/8 best with the ball.

The Under 11's played Wests at Weston with Wests scoring 9/44 off its 25 overs with Casey Capper 2/8 and Blake Chaney, Jake Gordon, James Johnson, Sam Bennett, Ben Thomson, Chloe Houlahan and Carly Kinch one wicket each. Weston chased the runs scoring 5/58 off its overs with

Casey Capper 18, Blake Chaney eight, Ben Edwards 7 not out and James Johnson 1 not out.

The senior girls played Raymond Terrace at Kurri Central with Weston scoring 50 to defeat the visitors who scored 40. Ashley Cocking 14 retired best with the bat while Kristy Hughes 1 for 2 off 2 overs and new comer Casey Edmonds 0/1 off 2 overs best with the ball. While the u/13's had the bye.
