Cessnock Rugby League Club’s annual presentation night is coming up Saturday, October 24 at the home of its major sponsor, Cessnock Supporters Club.
The night is where players who have excelled on the field will be acknowledged and a night which, in the eyes of many, is the highlight of the Rugby League season in Cessnock.
Players, officials, fans and supporters will come together for the award presentation which this year will be compered by former Goanna number seven Kane Bradley.
Some of the awards to be presented include the player of the year award known as the Goodsir and Cooper Award. This award is for each grade and acknowledges one player from each of the grades and is selected by vote of someone from the crowd at each game throughout the year. Last year’s first grade winner was Cessnock legend Lance Lennard taking the much sort after trophy for the third time in his career.
Other awards include the most improved player from each grade; best back and forward awards and the coaches awards. Most of the awards are named in honor of former Goanna greats including the Henry Tatana Coach's Award; the George Ambrum Most Improved Award; the Mark Watson Achievement award to name just three.
In addition to the player awards will be a newly created award named to honor the memory of former committee members Aileen Scott and Graham Robertson. This award is for the Club person of the year and is given in recognition of the extra ordinary services given by someone not necessarily a player.
Cessnock Club president, Merv McLennan, has issued a special invitation to all football club sponsors to attend the evening so that due recognition can be given to their contribution which is so vital to the successful running of the club. Mr. McLennan further issues an invitation to anyone interested in football to come along and help celebrate a great year by the Goannas.
"Fans turn up at all our games throughout the year and to attend the presentation night would complete their 2009 football journey," said Mr. McLennan.
The football club is currently in recess with the players enjoying a well earned rest. First grade coach Todd Edwards has indicated that training is due to start again on November 30 with those wanting to be in the running for first grade put on notice to attend.
Everyone interested in football is invited to attend the Presentation evening with tickets available from Tom Scott 0429 906 924 or Merv McLennan on 0438 616 424 at a cost of $25 per head which includes food. The evening will commence at 6.30pm.
