Kurri Bulldogs back in top four after solid effort against Lakes

01 Jul, 2009 11:06 AM
A 14-point haul to Kurri’s George Ndaira proved to be the difference as Kurri overpowered Lakes United 26-14 at HEZ Sportsground on Saturday.

Replacing Pearson at halfback for the match, Ndaira posted first points for the home side crossing for a great individual try.

He was unable to add the extras allowing Lakes to take the lead after they responded soon after with a converted try of their own.

For much of the first half Lakes seemed to continue on from the form of their recent performance against the Bay.

The opportunity to extend the lead was denied next time however after play was called back to a forward pass. Sensing the opportunity, Luke Quigley turned this into points for Bulldogs as he sent fullback Mick Gavin under the posts for a 10-6 half time advantage.

The second half saw Kurri gain further control through tries to Luke Mercer and Ndaira for a 20-6 lead.

Lakes hit back with another try of their own, but replacement half Jason Wallace put the game out of Lakes reach, running into a nice gap to go under the posts untouched.

The forward pack laid their foundation for the win with Reegan Tanner picking up the players’ player and Marty Oborne the Coach’s award. Centre Luke Mercer was a standout for the backs.

The win sees Kurri hang onto fourth spot on the ladder going into next week’s tough away assignment against Wyong. New signing, former Knights and Cowboys player Daniel Abraham, will be playing.

Reserve grade turned on the entertainment as they continued their return to form with a 48-0 win. Sam Parker was voted players’ player and Kelvin Mathie received the coach’s award. Fellow Kiwi Foa was impressive in his strongest game yet for the club.

The Under 19’s received a much-needed two points for their win over Lakes 12-6. Sam Cork put in a powerful display and picked up the points for his efforts.
