Four players from Pokolbin Junior Rugby Union club have been selected into the Newcastle Hunter Wildfires 2012 training squad.
From the Under-14’s, Mackenzie Doody and Jaeden Ewing have been selected. If they make the run-on squad, they will play in the NSW Country Championships in Ballina in May.
Their Pokolbin Rugby coach from last year, Mick Doody, says it is good recognition for the boys.
“Both lads trained hard in the last few years, developing their skills and working well as team players,” he said.
As a testament to the flexibility of Ewing’s ability, he has been selected for the No. 8 position, but usually plays in the front row for Pokolbin.
From the U13’s, Hamish Boxall and Max Murray will be training with the Rep side. Their NSW Country Championships will be taking place in Mudgee, also in May.
Interestingly, Hamish Boxall’s dad played Senior rugby for Pokolbin.
The Manager for the Under 13 boys from last year’s Pokolbin Rugby team, Jerome Scarborough, is not surprised these boys have been selected for rep honours.
“Hamish has good size and strength and will be great in the No. 8 position. Max has a heart as big as Phar Lap and though he’s a small kid, is not afraid to tackle someone three times his size!” he said.
These representative honours are a reward for the Pokolbin Junior Rugby Club which has only been operating for seven years.
“We are now seeing the success of our program in developing the skills and talents of individual players while maintaining a culture of teamwork and mateship. I’m sure there will be more Rep players from Pokolbin in the future,” President Tim Murray said.
