Memorable moments for Cessnock swimmers at World Masters Games

04 Nov, 2009 09:39 AM
Thirteen Cessnock Masters Swimming Club members were part of what they described as a most memorable experience at the recently completed World masters Games in Sydney.

At what has been mentioned as the biggest swim meet Australia has seen, locals blended in with former international swimmers from many countries as well as many novices ranging in age from 20 to 98.

Competing were Ray Caldwell, Zena Blackwell, Sadie Fletcher, Jan Finn, Chris Marko, Pat Betts and John Lorang. Along with these swimmers were Naomi Watson, Pat McCarthy, Gail Wright, Noel and Diane Partridge and John Smith who were officiating on the pool deck.

The seven day swim event was physically challenging for all but they wouldn’t have it any other way. Each Cessnock member has their own memories and to hear them speak of their time there one can tell these memories will last a very long time.

Gail Wright spoke of the thrill of rubbing shoulders with former Olympians as well as the spirit of friendship amongst the overseas visitors. Noel Partridge commented on explaining race starting procedure to some of the novices who obviously had never swum a race. In Noel’s many years experience as a check starter in Masters Swimming he didn’t think he would have to coach someone at the “Worlds.”

Diane Partridge must be commended on the role she played in organizing the official’s roster for this meet.

The competition in the pool was high in quality and quantity with more than 1000 starters overall. To gain a placing and receive a medal at these games is something special indeed. Cessnock Masters had two medal winners, John Lorang taking bronze in his 200 metres backstroke and the ever consistent Jan Finn gaining silver in her 100 metres backstroke as well as the 50 metres freestyle. John and Jan also distinguished themselves in their other events by taking top 10 placings.

Zena Blackwell had a full card of events with the 100 metres backstroke, 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre freestyle, 50 metre breaststroke and 50 metre freestyle. Zena was placed in the top 10 in each of her swims.

Ray Caldwell challenged the 800 metre freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 400 freestyle and the 200 metre freestyle.

Sadie Fletcher tested her recent training in the 200 metre freestyle, 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre freestyle and the 50 metre freestyle.

Chris Marko chose the 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre freestyle, 50 metre breaststroke and 200 metre breaststroke.

Pat Betts competed in 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre freestyle, 50 metre breaststroke and the 200 metre breaststroke in which she gained a top 10 placing.

Now that the games are over the Cessnock members have settled back into the regular routine of summer training at the Cessnock pool.

All club members welcome any adult over 20 who are interested in swimming to come along and meet them on Wednesday nights at 6pm.
