Long “rallies” of days gone by bounced around all day when Cessnock District Tennis Club celebrated its 100th anniversary.
A crowd of close to 100 past and present players and officials, including life members gathered at the Aberdare Road courts where many met up with friends for the first time in many years and swapped memories of the club’s long and distinguished history in the region’s sporting arena.
A feature of the celebration was a display of old newspaper clippings and photographs, some dating back to the thirties and one photo that showed the club’s original courts next to St. John’s Anglican Church in Westcott Street.
Secretary, Nancy Langworthy, said the day was a huge success and following on the club will be making a DVD containing all the historical information showing the old newspaper items and photographs.
Mrs. Langworthy had the honour of cutting the anniversary cake at the luncheon. Among the guests were Mayor of Cessnock, Cr. Alison Davey, representatives from Northumberland, Maitland Kurri clubs and former club presidents Ron Hindmarsh and Col Andrews.
A former club professional, Trudi Musgrave, made the trip to Cessnock where she took part in an exhibition match with club juniors.
Former players each received a special key ring to mark the occasion while all who attended the lunch took home a laminated placemat that marked the occasion.
