The man was about to enter his home in Mitchell Street in Kurri Kurri at 9.20pm when he saw three men lurking near his house.
An altercation between the three men and the man eventuated and the man received multiple stab wounds to the abdomen and upper left arm.
Central Hunter Local Area Command crime manager Detective Inspector John Zdrilic said the man was a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang but there was no indication the incident was related.
The men are described as aged between 20 and 22. One was wearing a white shirt and was very skinny.
The men drove off in a white Toyota Hilux dual cab ute from Mitchell Drive.
Police have appealed to the public for information.
"If anyone has seen these people or saw any suspicious activity in Mitchell Street we urge them to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," Detective Inspector Zdrilic said.
