Hunter Valley Cat Haven has been established by cat lovers, Tracey Burkill and Ange Durrant who currently have more than 60 cats of all shapes and sizes under their care.
Both volunteers, Tracey has been caring for cats for the past two years and recently joined forces with Ange to help rehabilitate particularly adult cats that are most at risk of being put down, if not adopted.
“Everyone wants a kitten but it is the older cats who hang around the longest,” Tracey said.
“A lot of them become quite traumatised because of time spent at the pound or vet.
“We will keep them here as long as it takes until they are ready to be rehomed.”
Hunter Valley Cat Haven is a not-for-profit organisation and all cats are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and wormed before they are adopted out.
Tracey and Ange have also taken in a number of kittens, with Ange recently quitting her job to help care for the animals full time at Tracey’s Sawyers Gully property.
“When I saw how much help Tracey needed, especially coming into winter, I just had to help her,” Ange said.
“We want to help rehabilitate these cats but people don’t realise how long that takes.
“It takes a lot of work to get them to a point where they can be rehomed.
“I have really found my calling working here with Tracey.”
