The scholarships were worth $2500 each and bring the total awarded to local students since 2002 to $412,500.
Council received 75 applications from 35 students for this year’s scholarships and the successful applicants were chosen through an interview selection process.
Most students applied for the scholarships to assist with university fees, travel costs to and from university and TAFE, text books or expenses associated with raising a family while trying to study.
Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent said the awards will help the students achieve their dreams and aspirations.
“We are very proud of our students; they may one day be the future leaders of our city, or even our nation,” he said.
“It was so good to see how appreciative the winners are, plus the high level of achievement that we have within the Cessnock LGA; all of those students are brilliant.”
Last year’s mining scholarship recipient, Kylie Brook, was the MC for the night and told the audience that the award made a huge difference to her studies.
One of the inaugural award recipients, Katherine Mallik, was the guest speaker.
Ms. Mallik was a first-year law student at the University of Newcastle when she won a Mayoral Academic Scholarship in 2002.
She is now a senior associate at Clayton Utz, where she is part of the major projects team that has worked on some of the largest infrastructure projects in NSW.
