“When I found out I was so excited,” she said.
“Mum and dad overheard the call and I was in tears, mum was in tears and dad was nearly in tears.”
Organised by the Hunter Valley District Council of RSL sub-branches, the three-day tour will start in Venice and allow students to attend the 100th anniversary Dawn Service in Gallipoli on April 25, and also attend a ball in Turkey with Turkish students.
“It was so exciting to find out after all the hard work I put in,” Heidi said.
Further to Heidi’s excitement, she also received a pleasant surprise at the Hunter Valley District Council of the RSL meeting on the March 16 2014.
After giving a presentation to the council, she was then presented with the medals earned by her great-great grandfather almost 100 years ago to take and wear on the trip next year.
Heidi’s great-great grandfather Robert Thomas Logan joined the 35th battalion in 1915 and was killed in action in the 53rd battalion in Ypres, Belgium on September 23, 1917.
Heidi again was in tears when she found out she would be able to wear her relatives medals.
“It’s really amazing.” she said.
“It’s going to be a really good trip.”
