Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities is the flagship program of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW and 2014 marks its 34th anniversary.
The program fosters and recognises group and individual endeavours that protect, preserve and enhance local environments and communities across regional NSW.
Tidy Towns allows rural towns to showcase their efforts in creating a more sustainable community across a range of projects.
Cessnock will welcome assessor Chris Jeffreys with a lunch at Kitchener Poppethead Park on Tuesday, August 5, where she will be greeted by volunteers from six of the 15 Tidy Towns groups in Cessnock’s Local Government Area.
Ms. Jeffreys will spend four days in the area to inspect 14 projects that have been nominated from Branxton, Cessnock, Kurri and Wollombi.
All Tidy Towns assessors have undergone a comprehensive two-day training course in preparation for their role of assessing a range of town projects that have been nominated for an award category.
All assessors are experienced environmental professionals from a variety of backgrounds including local and state government, community groups, education institutions and the private sector.
The Keep New South Wales Beautiful assessing week is the beginning of a lengthy judging process that will culminate in Nundle – last year’s overall Tidy Town award winner – on the weekend of November 7 to 9.
The winners of the program will be celebrated at a Tidy Towns Awards weekend where communities can learn from other participants, attend workshops and build important networks from regional NSW.
