Mr. Cox comes to the position after four-and-a-half years as deputy to Malcolm Bromhead, who has transitioned to the position of executive officer for the Centre of Innovation and Sustainability.
Executive principal of the St. Philip’s Christian College group, Graeme Irwin, said that the principal’s position attracted a large number of high quality applications from around Australia and overseas and the appointment has been made after an in-depth selection process.
“Darren is an outstanding leader and has passion and vision for the college,” Mr. Irwin said.
“In his time in leadership in the college Darren has seen tremendous growth and has been a vital part of establishing the culture and environment of the school.
“He has also established a good rapport with staff and is well known to the students, parents and the school community.
“We believe that he is the perfect candidate for the position.”
Mr. Cox has a Diploma of Teaching from UNSW, a Bachelor of Education from Southland Christian College and is currently completing a Masters of Educational Leadership through UNSW.
He has also been engaged in the AIS Flagship Leadership program specifically designed to prepare participants for principalship in independent schools.
Mr. Cox said that he is very excited about his new position, but said life had definitely taken him on a different path than he expected.
“It’s funny because growing up I was always the mischievous kid getting kicked out of class,” he said.
“I never saw myself growing up to be a principal that’s for sure.”
It wasn’t until completing his work experience at local high school that he said he caught the teaching bug.
Now living in Cessnock with his family, Mr. Cox said that he plans on being at St. Philip’s for a long time to come.
His wife Esther also works at the school as a part-time English teacher and their children Ellie, Zac and Lucy are also students.
