The Keinbah trainer has dominated the Newcastle trainers’ premiership and is on track to claim a fifth straight title, while he is also favourite to claim the NSW metropolitan trainers’ title.
But until Sunday, Group 1 success had been beyond him.
That changed when Marty Monkhouser went out to a customary lead under the drive of Lauren Panella, and was never headed in the Breeders Crown for four-year-old entires and geldings.
Despite doing the same thing last Sunday in the heat, the four-year-old gelding found little support in the betting ring and was sent out at the healthy quote of $20.50.
Tritton, however, went into the race confident that the horse, which finished third in Maitland’s Inter City Pace at the start of the year, could defy the double-figure odds.
“He’s had a good season and he is a horse on the rise,” he said.
“We knew he’d get the run of the race and Lauren drove him well - he had to do more work than we would have liked but it shows just how good his current form is.”
Tritton’s other group 1 entrant yesterday, Controversial ($54.60), could only manage fifth in the Group 1 Breeders Crown for two-year-old colts and geldings, but it didn’t detract from the occasion.
“It’s been a great season and obviously this is a great way to end it, not just for me but for the owners and for Lauren as well,” he said.
“The owners have always been fantastic to us and for us to get their horses into a group 1 is very pleasing.
“For us it’s been our biggest year we’ve ever had with entries in the Miracle Mile and Inter Dominion, and we’ve had placings in group races, but it’s good to finish with a group 1 win.”
It capped off a weekend that began with a win at Newcastle’s Friday night meeting courtesy of Gotta Grunter ($6.90) in race two.
The nine-race card was punctuated by a winning double from Ellalong trainer/driver Michael Formosa, who claimed wins in races one and seven with Real Armbro ($12.20) and Miss Art Ranger ($12.80).
Clayton Harmey’s Nine Mile Maiden ($4.50) rounded out the meeting with his first win in nearly three months in the final race of the evening.
