The Canberra Raiders forward took it upon himself to get involved with Ronald McDonald House Charities and through a mentoring program at a local high school on a personal level without the profile and hype that comes with major events.
He also gives up much of his spare time to work with the Starlight Foundation, Cerebral Palsy Alliance and St. Johns Care.
Edwards was also a special guest at last year’s Cessnock Relay For Life, donating some Raiders merchandise that raised $600 at auction.
He is often asked to donate merchandise and his time to different events and as such does so without question and always out of his own pocket.
“Helping the community is something very close to my heart, I've been fortunate enough to build a career in rugby league so it is my responsibility to give back and help the less fortunate,” Edwards said.
“Putting a smile on the face of a sick or disadvantaged child is the most satisfying feeling anyone can experience, it's humbling and inspiring to see the perseverance of these young people.”
The Ken Stephen Medal is named after the NSWRL administrator who dedicated 28 years of service to the game.
Voting is live to the public until midnight on Wednesday, September 10. Vote at nrl.com/kenstephenmedal.
