Federal Labor leader Bill Shorten will attend the event as guest speaker.
There have been four coal mining fatalities in the district since last year’s service – including the two at Austar on April 15 – resulting in the largest addition of names to the Union’s Memorial Wall since the Gretley Colliery tragedy in 1996.
“Memorial Day is an important event for families who are dealing with the sadness of their very recent losses, as well as families who lost their loved ones in years gone past,” CFMEU Northern Mining and NSW Energy Secretary Grahame Kelly said.
“Mining is a dangerous industry and we need to be ever vigilant and continue to improve on safety.”
The service is open to the community and the public is most welcome.
It will take place at the CFMEU Northern Mining and NSW Energy office, 67A Aberdare Road, Cessnock on Sunday at 10.30am.
