About 2.30am on Saturday morning a white Holden Commodore was driven into the front door of the petrol station on Wollombi Road.
When the would-be robbers could not get inside, they eventually gave up and left the scene.
The car was found about an hour later burnt out at Pokolbin. Police could not yet confirm whether the car was stolen.
Central Hunter crime manager Detective Inspector John Zdrilic said an investigation into the incident continued and encouraged witnesses to come forward and help police with their investigation.
“The two individuals had their faces covered, seemingly they were there to knock stuff off,” he said.
“We’re still making inquiries.”
Anyone with information about the incident should call Maitland police on 4934 0200 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
