Greens NSW MP John Kaye, who attended a community meeting at Wollombi on September 2, said the Liberals and Nationals MPs refused to accept the motion.
“Liberals and Nationals MPs in the NSW upper house ignored the Wollombi community’s concerns that they are about to lose their public school,” Dr Kaye said.
“Nationals members are supposed to stand up for rural and regional communities.
“A local public school is a fundamental right that not only serves families, but also holds communities together.”
The Department of Education is conducting a review of Wollombi Public School, which has been operating since 1852 and has had low enrolments in recent years.
The Wollombi Valley Educational Review Consultative Group, headed by school education director Bryan Campbell, will finalise its review report by this Friday.
It will be presented to executive director Frank Potter, who will make the recommendation in regards to the school’s fate. His recommendation will be forwarded to education minister Adrian Piccoli to consider.
More than 400 people have signed Wollombi P&C’s petition at change.org, which asks Mr. Piccoli to not close the school.
