The collaboration first came about when the class attended one of Bunnings do-it-yourself workshops.
Bunnings Warehouse Cessnock activities organiser Sue Whitaker said the team were so inspired by the class, that when it came time to nominate a school to benefit from a partnership with Planet Ark, Nulkaba was a top choice.
“We saw how much the children enjoyed themselves at the workshop that we wanted to build on that,” she said.
“The kids love getting their hands dirty.”
As part of Planet Ark’s National Tree Day initiative, Bunnings donated soil, plants and building materials to help create the garden – with the help of the social skills class.
Teacher Amanda Harmen said that the children had an absolute ball with the Bunnings team and it was a great way to build their confidence.
“Everything we do with these kids is to help build on their real-life experiences and skills,” she said.
“This is something that they can be really proud of.”
The class also helped paint a farmyard mural around the garden, which they will care and maintain throughout the year.
