The TAFE grounds were transformed into a sea of candles, fire sculptures, lanterns and light installations as the crowd was entertained by live bands and interactive performers.

Creative director Vicki Sienczuk said she was “ecstatic” with how the event turned out and that the council has received some great feedback.

“We’re already thinking about next year; it can only get bigger and better,” she said.

“There’s potential to attract tourism.”

Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent said the community’s response to the festival was brilliant.

“It’s a fantastic starting point to build from,” he said.

“It also gave council an opportunity to showcase its services, such as the library and CYCOS.”

Cr. Pynsent said the concept of a lantern parade to open the festival has been suggested and would be a possibility for next year’s event.

The first Spring Awakening was held in September 2012 but the event missed out on funding in the 2013 budget.

The inaugural event went on to become a finalist in the 2014 Local Government Arts and Culture awards (which were for events delivered between July 2012 and December 2013).
