King, who had six group one winners to his credit in the west, made the trip across earlier this year and has made a successful transition to his new surroundings.
Taylor Marshall, son of Melbourne Cup winning jockey John Marshall (Rogan Josh 1999) won the apprentice’s premiership trophy sponsored by Cessnock Leagues Club.
Regular visitor to Wine Country Race Club, Paul Perry, picked up the trainer’s trophy sponsored by Hygain.
Another highlight of the Spring carnival launch by the NJC, held at Noah’s on the Beach, was the NJC Racing Achiever of the Year award that went to Robert Thompson, marking his achievement of riding his 4000th winner.
The winner was kept in-camera until announced by the NJC’s chief executive officer, Cameron Williams.
Other special announcements were that the late Max Lees and Paul Perry would be nominated for Australian Racing Hall of Fame.
Gary Harley, who compered the event, said that Robert Thompson’s name was already before the judges and should certainly be considered favourable in the near future.

Wine Country Race Club resumes racing after a one-month break with its next meeting on Monday, September 29.
Only one other meeting has been scheduled for 2014 and that will be Tuesday, December 16.
