Councillors vote for the deputy mayor every 12 months.
Cr. Hawkins won the ballot from Liberal opponent Cr. Bryce Gibson, seven votes to five.
Cr. Hawkins is a Ward A councillor and was first elected to council in 2008. He will take over the deputy mayor’s position from independent councillor Allan Stapleford on October 1.
The deputy mayor's responsibilities include standing in for the mayor in cases of illness, absence or otherwise.
At the opening of the refurbished Millgang Bridge at Ellalong on Monday, Cr. Hawkins said: Council’s achieving good things and I hope the good work continues over the coming year”.
“I will continue to support the Mayor and represent the community in my new role”, he added.
