The 2Day FM radio host had travelled to the United Arab Emirates for a number of fashion shoots when her ankle began to swell so much that she consulted doctors, who at first thought she was suffering from deep vein thrombosis.

But the 34-year-old told the radio station on Monday morning that doctors now had no idea what was causing the swelling, which had prevented her from flying home.

Monk, once a member of pop group Bardot, began crying as she described her affliction.

"Yeah I'm upset. I'm actually getting upset, for real," she said on air, breaking down.

"Honestly I don't know what to do.

"They don't know [what is wrong with my ankle] and now I've got a rash on my hands as well. This is the worst holiday of my life, I swear to God. I've had it [my ankle] elevated the whole time. But now it looks like an elephant. It's not normal, it's not cute, and I've got to be honest, my knee is smaller than my ankle. That's not hot. So I could literally wear my necklace as an anklet."

 

Monk's radio co-hosts, Merrick Watts and Jules Lund, had initially called her on the phone believing the interview would be funny, but they ended it prematurely when they became aware of how distressed she was.

"We thought it was going to be funny but it's not that funny now," Watts said.

"Look Soph, this is probably not a conversation any more for us to have live on air," Lund added.

Monk has posted a number of photos of her trip on Instagram, including one of medical staff in her hotel room and another of her swollen foot.

"I mean??? After this pic, I understand why some say I'm a sex symbol! #Allergy #IMissMyAnkle #AreTherePlusSizeSocks?," she posted alongside the photo of her foot.
