Developed and successfully trialled by the University of Newcastle since 2008, HDHK is an obesity prevention program for fathers and their children, incorporating education with specifically designed fun and interactive physical activity sessions. 

The program is aimed at fathers, uncles, guardians and grandfathers or any father figure who wants to improve their fitness as well as set a healthy example for their kids.

Cessnock resident Shaun Graham took part in a past program with stepdaughter Jasmine King and said that it was a great way for them to connect, through exercising and enjoying each other’s company.

“The sock wrestling was definitely a highlight for us both, during the program,” he said. 

“The program provided resources for us to use when we wanted to get outside and be active. 

“It changed what we did as a family at dinner time; we moved back to the dining table and ate meals together. 

“We also established a trust paradigm, which still works for us today.”

The HDHK program is the first of its kind in the world and has been awarded the Excellence in Obesity Prevention Award from the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention in Australia. 

Mr. Graham said taking part in the program also had a huge impact on how his family plan their meals including Jasmine’s interest in cooking. 

“Jas has a real interest in cooking now, something that came about because of the program,” he said. 

 “I also became far more aware of the types of foods I was eating and how it affected my weight, particularly when I was tracking my diet through an app that was recommended by the program.”

HDHK sessions will held at Cessnock Public School from October 14, with nine weekly sessions to take place every Tuesday evening from 5.30pm through to the end of the school term and is open to all.
