East Cessnock Ladies Bowls have celebrated winning both the grade three and grade four pennants, with an unfurling ceremony held at East Cessnock Bowling Club last Wednesday.

Marion Crump, Cheryl Field, Carol Parkinson, Dianne Bailey, Tanya Jory, Jacqui Del-Degan, Shirley Sneesby and Donna Huth were the Hunter River District grade three winners while Uda Reckenberg, Lyn Johnson, Colleen Andrews, Helen Kirby, Nora Nicholls, Noeline Loosemore, Barbara Couch, Chris Hallam, Alma Scott took out grade four.
This year was also the first time that the club made it to state level, after successfully progressing through the Hunter River District Bowls Association regional championships.
The unfurling ceremony was attended by Lorn Park, Kurri, Gresford, Paxton, Maitland City, Telarah, Greta, East Maitland, Stonebridge, Clarence Town, Singleton, Beresfield, and Oakwood Village bowling clubs.
Guests of honour included Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent and Member for Cessnock Clayton Barr, with Hunter River District Bowls Association president Wanda Bedford and NSW Women’s Bowls director Sue O’Keefe presenting the teams with their pennant badges.
The day was also a celebration for the East Cessnock Ladies president Norma Austin, who has celebrated her 25th anniversary with the club.
Norma holds the record at the club for the longest continuous service, following 22 years as secretary and is one of only three life members including Peggy O’Hearn and Jean Hodge.
