This cost would cover a two-lane concrete bridge with an adjoining pedestrian path and associated road works.
Council recently met with Roads and Maritime Services to discuss a number of issues stemming from the opening of the Hunter Expressway – including the significant traffic increase on Frame Drive and subsequent impact on the bridge.
A council spokesperson said RMS has agreed to undertake joint road corridor planning to assist in addressing changes – in particular, looking at traffic movements to and from the Hart Road interchange and along Frame Drive and Gingers Lane.
Council officers are seeking further information from the RMS on the corridor planning project, including a schedule of proposed activities.
“If it is determined that major upgrade works are required to Gingers Lane, Frame Drive and Frame Drive Bridge, significant funds will be required to carry out any upgrade,” the spokesperson said.
“A project of this magnitude would have significant impact on council’s budget if external funds are not made available, and council will be seeking advice from the RMS on potential funding sources.”
Council implemented a 10-tonne load limit, with concrete barriers and traffic lights on the bridge in July, which was reduced five tonnes in August.
These measures will be in place until funding is available to repair or replace the bridge.
A further report will be provided to council following advice from the RMS to advise of the preliminary outcomes of the road corridor planning and potential funding opportunities to carry out any required works.
