The streets will be transformed for the Cessnock equivalent of Philip Island, with 60 teams set to start their Honda CT 110 postie bike engines for the main event on Sunday.
And the line-up is nothing short of impressive, including 2013 world endurance champion Alex Cudlin who is going in as one of the favourites to take home the cup.
But event organiser, Cessnock Motorcycle Club president Dave Robinson said that there will be plenty of local competition with teams entered from all over the country.
“To think that Cudlin is coming to Cessnock, fresh home from wins on a world level – it is quite remarkable,” he said.
“I am really delighted by that and the quality of entries received has really blown me away but I think some of your local guys will give him a run for his money.”
Organisers are promising that Sunday’s event will have all the colour, pomp and ceremony of a Formula One or Moto GP, with plenty of entertainment for the whole family.
Leading up to the big race will be a flypast by the Cessnock Aero Club, a march by the Cessnock RSL Pipe Band and a parade of the teams.
Radio station 2CHR will be broadcasting trackside all day and Mark Bracks, one of the most knowledgeable and credible race commentators in Australia and a legend in motorcycle sports, will be calling the race.
The 1.5-kilometre circuit will be set up on Saturday, with the start line situated at the intersection of Hall and Charlton Streets, Cessnock.
A ‘Welcome to Cessnock’ street party will also kick off at 6pm on Saturday for participating teams and spectators.
In total 60 teams will compete during event to fill the 28 grid positions for the main event – a two-hour race through the streets, with each team consisting of two riders and two support members.
The broadcast team have also invited Australian motoring and motorsport media stalwart Will Hagento join them during the day and keep the crowd up to date on team times and rider race records.
Glen Dix (“Mr Checkers”), the famous motor sport starter has been given the honour of waving the finishing flag.
Qualifying rounds will start at 9am on Sunday morning and run throughout the day before the commencement of the Grand Prix event at 3pm.
