Gough came on fourth change and took the holy grail of bowling with his second, third and fourth deliveries of his second over. Unfortunately it was not enough to get his team home, as they were skittled for just 37 in pursuit of 44.
In a good day for bowlers, Supporters first grade skipper Nathan Stapleford bagged 7-28 off 10 in the match against Wine Country, but again it was not enough to get his team home.
In first grade Mulbring got one back on the old foe Bellbird by two wickets in the match of the round at Carmichael Park.
Bellbird skipper Jason Orr won the toss and elected to bat, but were restricted to 117 due to some tight bowling and fielding from the Mulbring side.
Elliott Gyler was easily the best of an unusually disappointing Tigers scorecard with 44 not out, while Jason Orr and Matt Crump made a dozen each.
Brad Strachan was Mulbring’s best with the ball, bagging 4-33 off 8.4. He was well supported by Greg Sheehan (3-24 off 10) who was once again very economical with the new ball, and brother Adam Sheehan (2-28 off 10) who chipped in with a brace of wickets.
The Marlins passed the target (8-119) in the 30th over, not before a struggle. Greg Sheehan produced another match winning performance with 28, with Drew Olsen (20), Andy Carmichael (17) and Strachan (15) doing enough to get the Marlins home.
Bellbird left arm orthodox champion Dave Gyler was outstanding for the home side with 5-30 off 10, but the modest total proved just a fraction too hard to defend in the end.
In the final game of the round Wine Country grabbed a confidence boosting 38-run win against Supporters Club at Allandale.
Wood Ducks skipper Stephen Hedger won the toss and elected to bat, with the home side putting aside their recent batting woes by totalling a healthy 180 although being bowled out in the 32nd over.
Although the majority of the top order failed, Nathan Davey came in at number 11 and blasted 63, with number 10 batsman Ryan Maxwell also sharing in a fine partnership with an unbeaten 36. Hedger made 28 at the top of the order, with Shane Morley chipping in with a handy 23.
Supporters skipper Nathan Stapleford was outstanding with the ball, ripping through the top order to return the impressive figures of 7-28 off 10.
The Goannas were all out for 142 in reply, with Mike Gates timing the ball nicely at the top of the order with 42. Stapleford (19), Tim Goldman (19) and Anthony Chalk (16) all made starts but they struggled to build any decent sort of partnerships needed to claim the win.
Wickets for the Wood Ducks were shared between Peter Auditore (3-26 off 10), Nathan Wright (3-12 off four) and Dale Arnold (2-36 off eight).
At Miller Park Greta/Branxton continued their good start to the season with a convincing 96-run victory over Peden’s Hotel.
Blues skipper Josh Dagg won the toss and had no hesitation batting first on a typical Chris Charnock belter.
The home side accumulated runs at a nice rate, closing their 40 over innings at 8-220.
Veteran Greg Andrews showed no signs of slowing down, timing the ball crisply for his team’s top score of 60. Promoted to the top of the order Damien Frize impressed his skipper with 49, while Barry Richards (34no), Danny Davey (30) and Dagg (15) all cashed in on the good conditions.
Peden’s skipper Matt Hopley was the best of the Piranhas attack with 3-40 off 10, with Dale Johnson taking 2-57 off 10.
The Piranhas were all out in the 26th over for 124 in reply, with Hopley playing a fine skipper’s hand with 80. He came in when his team was in all sorts of strife at 6-29 and put some respectability back in the score sheet.
Craig Duffie was the only other batsman in double figures with 17, while for Greta/Branxton in the absence of Watson and Shelley, Jake Goodyer took responsibility of the new ball and bagged 6-29 off 9.2, with Mark Peace giving great support at the other end with a very economical 3-6 off seven.
