The Special Olympics Australian National Games kicked off on Monday, with a colourful opening ceremony held at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne.

Special Olympics Hunter Valley have sent their biggest contingent ever to represent NSW, including Cessnock-area swimmers Denver Kearney, Ranon Holstein, Sean Payne and Tonya-Lee Lacey as well as ten pin bowler Andrew Stuckings.
More than 1000 athletes with an intellectual disability from all over Australia will compete across 12 official sports throughout the week.
The games will also serve as a platform for athletes to compete at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015 to be held in Los Angeles, USA.
The aquatic events began on Tuesday and will conclude on Thursday while the bowling events will be held throughout the week, wrapping up on Friday.
